Medicare is a federal insurance plan that provides a variety of health benefits. It is generally geared towards those 65 or older or with serious health issues or disabilities.
Original Medicare includes basic hospital and medical benefits. Within this group, there are two different plans—Plan A and Plan B. You must be enrolled in both of these plans before considering any additional options.
For additional coverage, you can choose to enroll in a Medicare Advantage, or Part C plan. These plans are privately offered, and help coordinate your Original Medicare benefits to lower your out-of-pocket costs. They may also provide some additional benefits.
Medicare Part D is another additional option that can be combined with either Original Medicare or Part C. It provides prescription drug coverage on virtually any drug you would need.
Medicare supplements, or Medigap, can be added to your Original Medicare plan. There are 10 distinct plans within this category, each with its own specialized benefits at different prices. They will cover costs such as your Original Medicare premiums, copayments, and more.
Medicare eligibility is generally based on age or health. You’re eligible if you are 65 or older, have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or other conditions, or have a disability.
You can enroll in Medicare during a specific time known as an enrollment period. If you want to learn more, check out our article on Medicare eligibility.
