Medigap Plan C is the most comprehensive Medicare Supplement Plan in comparison to the other supplement plans on the market. But, this plan isn’t available for new Medicare beneficiaries (who weren’t eligible for Medicare before 2020 because as of the 1st of January 2020 it was phased out). This plan doesn’t cover only the part B excess charges but facing those charges very rarely happens.
Medigap Plan C covers the costs that Original Medicare leaves behind. In this way, Plan C reduces your out-of-pocket spending by covering the costs that Original Medicare leaves behind and covers most Medicare-approved expenses except for excess charges, as mentioned above. The Medicare Supplement Plan C is an ideal choice for someone who frequently sees the doctor and lives in a state that does not allow excess charges.
Plan C covers most of the healthcare costs and will supplement your Original Medicare because it covers:
Part A coinsurance
hospital stay costs up to 365 days after Medicare benefits reach their limit
Part B coinsurance or copayment
First three blood prints
Part A coinsurance and copayment for hospice care
Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
Part A deductible
Part B deductible
80% Foreign travel exchange
The only thing that Plan C doesn’t cover is Part B excess charges. Part B excess charges could happen if you go to a doctor that doesn’t accept the terms of Medicare and won’t bill you accordingly to those terms.
Because of that, they can charge you up to 15% of additional costs for provided service- this is also known as balance billing.
To enroll in plan C you would have to be eligible for Medicare before the 1st of January 2020 because from 2020 Medicare Supplement Plans don’t cover Part B deductible anymore.
If you become eligible after 2020 you can no longer enroll in it but those who already purchased plans before can keep their plan.
However, if you turned 65 before 2020 and were enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A and B) you can still enroll in Medigap Plan C during the Open Annual Enrollment.
Because this is the most comprehensive plan on the market the costs are not that high because you are only responsible for paying a monthly premium which could be from 115$ to 220$ a month. Most of the other services are covered a hundred percent with this plan.
The cost of Medicare Supplement Plan C in 2023 will vary based on your ZIP Code, age, tobacco use status, gender, and the fact that the plan is phased out, so fewer seniors are enrolling in it. Due to the fact that the enrollment rate for this plan is low, premium costs will continue to rise annually to compensate.
Plan C is great for every eligible Medicare beneficiary because it covers almost every service you can get. Yes, this plan comes with a higher monthly premium but it is worth this cost especially if you travel abroad and go to the hospital on a regular basis.
If you want to be sure that you are covered and want to avoid paying for additional costs for provided services you should definitely consider buying this plan.
